Exports of New Zealand’s fruits to China witnessed an increase of 53% over the course of the year.

China remains Aotearoa New Zealand’s main trading partner in the bilateral trade arena, with commerce in goods and services totalling NZ$38 billion in the period ending in the month of December 2023. The March 2024 quarter the exports of New Zealand to China were NZ$5.34 billion, representing 21.6 percent of the country’s total exports.

The first year 2024, the New Zealand’s exports of fruit to China witnessed an increase of 53% over the previous year to reach NZ$378 million in April. The reason for this increase is the arrival of Zespri’s Kiwifruit after two difficult seasons which have yielded greater, higher-quality crops. A significant proportion of this harvest destined to China, and a significant portion of it destined for the Chinese market, there is a good chance to continue a strong performance within the category of exporting fruit.

The pear and apple sectors have also produced high-quality harvests, and Envy the apples’ earlier harvest likely to affect future export numbers. Recovery from Cyclone Gabrielle that impacted vital orchards in February 2023, also played a role in the improved year-on-year export numbers.
