Ecuadorian avocado exports grew by 216%.

Ecuador is a country that has a lengthy history as a exporter of bananas, has expanded its export options for agro products by importing avocados. The fruit is facing several commercial hurdles.

Based on data provided by the Central Bank of Ecuador, between Jan. and July. 2024 Ecuador exported 2,265 tonnes of avocado, worth $3,097,000. i.e. an increase of 216% and 178% more value, despite an 18% decrease on average over the 1,047 tons worth $1740,000 shipped over the same time span of prior year, according to Alex Bustos Guerra, agronomist and the president of Green Control LA (Ecuador).

“This was the case due to the fact that in 2024 Colombia was the primary destination for the Ecuadorian avocado, with the highest share of 42.2 percent share, and an average at 0.17 per kilogram. This was following by Spain having an 25.6 percentage share, as well as the Netherlands which had 20.5 percent.” Bustos Guerra stated. “The average cost of an Ecuadorian avocado is $1.37 per kilogram, whereas the Peruvian product’s median price is $1.80 per kilogram,” Bustos Guerra said.

In the months of January through July this year, Spain was the primary market for Ecuadorian avocados, which accounted for 66.4 percent of the exports at $1.80 per kilogram, Ecuador achieved an average of US$1.66 per Kilo.

“Ecuador is not doing anything right. We are said to have unique export and production window, which means that are different from the Andean avocado is more fat and thus better prices. Statistics on exports contradict this,” Bustos Guerra stated.
