Drewry’s World Container Index increased 4 percent to $5,318 for a 40ft container in the week.

The index grew by four percent to $5,318 per 40ft container last week, and has risen 256% compared to the previous week. The most recent Drewry WCI composite index of $5,318/40ft is 49% less than the last peak in pandemics of $10,377 that was recorded in September 2021. It is 274% more than the typical for 2019 (pre-pandemic) prices of $1,420.

The median composite index of the past year is $3,579/40ft of container. This is 831 greater than the average 10 years ago cost of $1,748 (which was increased due to the extraordinary 2020-22 Covid timeframe).

The cost of freight for Shanghai to Rotterdam rose 7%, or $455-$7,322 for a 40ft box. The rates for Shanghai through Los Angeles and Shanghai to New York rose 4% in value to $6,673 or $7827 per 40ft container, and $7827 respectively.

In the same way, rates from Rotterdam from Shanghai to Shanghai, Shanghai to Genoa and New York to Rotterdam grew by 1%, reaching $676, $7,102, and $640 for each feu. However, rates for Rotterdam towards New York decreased 2% which is $49 and $2,044 for a 40ft container. In contrast, rates from Los Angeles to Shanghai remain constant. Drewry is expecting a minor rise in the cost of freight due to the congestion of Asian ports.
