The Drewry WCI composite index increased 3percent to $3,905 for a 40ft container. It was 60% lower than the high of $10,377 recorded in September 2021, but 175% more than annual average of $1,420 (pre-pandemic).
The mean YTD index for composites is $3,905 for 40ft containers, 1,040 more than the 10-year median of $2,865 (inflated by the incredibly 2020-22 Covid timeframe).
Shipping costs between Shanghai from Shanghai to Los Angeles increased 7% equivalent to $330 to $4,829 per 40ft container. Similar to that, rates from Shanghai up to New York rose 6% equivalent to $371 to $6,445 per 40ft container. In the same way, rates for Rotterdam to Shanghai as well as New York to Rotterdam increased 2percent to $516 and $838 for a 40ft container respectively. However, rates from Shanghai to Rotterdam fell by one percent which is $45-$4,774 for a 40ft container. In contrast, rates for Shanghai through Genoa, Los Angeles to Shanghai to Shanghai, and Rotterdam from New York remained stable. Drewry believes rates on that Transpacific trade to increase during the week ahead driven by frontloading prior to the impending ILA port strike scheduled for January 2025 as well as the anticipated rise in tariffs that will be imposed by the new Trump Administration.
