Drewry’s World Container Index decreased by 6percent this week

Drewry’s World Container Index decreased by 6percent to $1,384 for a 40ft container in the week of July.

The current Drewry WCI composite index of $1,384 for a 40-foot container is now 3percent lower than the average for 2019 (pre-pandemic) rate of $1420. The mean composite index in the past year is $1,688 for a 40-foot container and is $986 less than the average rate for 10 years which was $2,674 (which was exaggerated because of the unusual 2021-22 Covid timeframe).

The cost of freight on Shanghai from Los Angeles decreased by 9 percent, or from $208 to the amount of $2,000 for each feu. The rates for Shanghai to Rotterdam fell by 6 percent which is $79-$1,148 for a 40-foot container. This was followed by rates for Shanghai to Genoa dropping by 5%, or between $76 and $1,373 per 40-foot box. The rates for Shanghai from New York and Rotterdam to New York declined by 2 percent to $1,486 and $2,573 per feu, respectively.

Similar to that, the rates for Los Angeles to Shanghai shrank by 11%, to $765 for a 40ft container. However, rates for Rotterdam from Shanghai rose by 2 percent and reached $474 per 40ft box. However, rates on New York to Rotterdam remained constant. Drewry expects rates for East-West spot for lanes to be close to the current level, in general for the next few days.
