Around 1,150 people of the corrugated-board sector and their suppliers were informed about the newest innovations and processes optimisation during the FEFCO Technical Seminar held in Lyon from October 25 to 27 in which ideas, policy as well as the newest technologies available in the field were discussed.

Energy efficiency improvements and sustainability enhancements, enhanced energy use, the production of stronger and lighter boards and other innovative techniques were on display in Lyon’s Centre de Congres which this year featured the theme, “Shaping our future through innovative technologies.”

The conference brought together innovative people from the corrugated industry and its suppliers, customers as well as industry leaders to talk about how digitalization and the use of intelligence could improve manufacturing processes, increase the management of supply chains, and improve the overall efficiency. The conference featured special discussions on energy efficiency, cutting down on energy use, lighter paper grams as well as artificial intelligence (AI) as well as digital printing, logistics flow bio-based coatings, cybersecurity, as well as EU law. To increase the interactivity The program was built around four panel discussions featuring leading experts and professionals from both the industrial and academic industry.

FEFCO President Fady Gemayel said the corrugated sector was already aligned to the Europe’s Green Deal objectives. “Our product has proved vital for the health of our economy as well as for society. It has shown its distinctive function in the distribution value chain. It is recyclable and reused” He stated.

Director General of FEFCO Eleni Despotou said the event proved that the corrugated cardboard industry is ready for the future. “Our planet has challenges ahead as we work towards a more sustainable future and continue to enhance the quality of service to customers and improve customer satisfaction.”

Innovative, inspiring and eco-friendly innovation in the corrugated field received prestigious prizes on the 27th of October at the conclusion of the conference.

The highest-value award was given to the Best Innovation and this year, the Gold Award went to Kyoto Group for their successful technique for electrifying process heat generated from renewable sources like solar and wind energy through an energy storage system that uses thermal energy.

This Silver Award was attributed to JB Machinery, and their Auto Dryer Control (ADC) is a method that reduces energy use of the infrared (IR) dryers, by making adjustments to the dryer’s settings.

The Bronze Award was won by Graco Distribution BV, for their efforts in the field of replacing hydraulic pumps by electronic double diaphragm pumps. The Sustainability Award was awarded the Kyoto Group.
