“Consumers today are willing to pay more in order to speed up their lives regardless of having to shell out an extra 10 cents”

Greek eating habits of fruits and vegetables has changed drastically in the past sixty years. It can be seen in the portfolios of commercial businesses of wholesalers who have supported it through the years.

One of the companies that is involved one of them is Kavvadias S.A., based in the Athens Central Market. In celebration of its 60th anniversary, Mr. Dionysis Kvvadias, who is the third generation that runs the business of his family, says: “The company started 60 years ago and had 4 to 5 codes for Greek goods, with carrots as its primary product however, it now handles 200 codes for Greek and imported fruit and other vegetables, as well as an emphasis on vegetable. Our goal is to become the first name that pops up to mind whenever someone requires huge quantities of fresh vegetables with no compromise on quality.”

He. Kavvadias describes the dramatic change in consumption of vegetables within Greece: “The vegetable market in Greece is well established, however there has been significant change in it during the past 60 years our company has been in operation. At one time, vegetable such as celery and celeriac were popular. They are not available due to the fact that they are cooked products that need preparation time, and families have cut down on the amount of amount of time they are required to cook. The lettuce is also being removed by the use of pre-cut salads.”

According to the Greek merchant explains: “”Consumers today pay extra to speed up their lives regardless of having pay 10 cents to purchase the most practical item. We have noticed this change and is considering ways to profit from this trend. We’re always looking to create something fresh.”

“The transformations of the fruits and vegetables that are consumed in the past 60 years have been huge. In terms of the fruits, mangoes and limes, and pineapples have been a regular staples of Greek people in both their use as table items and also as cocktails ingredients. Beyond the consumption map the production map has been altered. Avocados and other fruits that were unavailable in Greece before they are now available by bulk imports in Crete,” says Mr. Kavvadias.

One of the latest developments to Greek farms are berries of various varieties. “Now the berries, like blueberries can be grown in Greece and in the Ilia region. However, they’re scarce and don’t provide enough to last throughout the season. So, the majority of our fruits are imported from overseas,” concludes Mr. Kavvadias.
