Packaging solutions for rambutan, which will extend the shelf life, using the plant-based material, could offer a answer to the problems that exporters of rambutan faced. Emily Rodriguez, head of marketing at the PeelON, a manufacturer of fresh produce packaging PeelON says it is the RamPeel is among PeelON’s most popular packaging options, specially designed to suit rambutan “It’s compostable and prolongs the shelf-life of rambutan as much as three times, while also addressing major problems like spoilage, blackening and shrinkage. Rambutan is highly sensitive to environmental conditions, and could cause these issues that result from the dehydration process. RamPeel provides an environment that is controlled surrounding the fruit through the regulation of moisture and oxygen levels. The process slows down the rate of respiration, and decreases the growth of fungal organisms, making sure that the fruit keeps its shape, appearance and size for a longer period of time.”
According to Rodriguez The packaging PeelON designed specifically addresses problems that are encountered with traditional packaging. “Unlike conventional plastic wraps, which contain excess moisture and promote fungal growth, the breathable plant-based product actively controls humidity and oxygen, stopping early spoilage. It removes the need for additional moisture absorbers and procedures while still being sustainable.”
The RamPeel packaging can also prolong the shelf-life of packaged product. Rodriguez says: “RamPeel is fully compostable that breaks down into natural parts within a period of 180 days when under circumstances of composting at home. The packaging reduces plastic use and reduces the amount of waste that is disposed into the environmental. Furthermore, by prolonging the shelf-life of rambutan RamPeel can also reduce food waste that can be a major contributor to the greenhouse emission of gases.”
Rodriguez states the fact that PeelON collaborated with exporters of rambutan to evaluate and determine whether the product is able to meet the requirements of their customers. “We’ve carried out extensive tests together with rambutan distributors and exporters throughout Central American regions like Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras. The results are remarkable with up to 90% reduction in spoilage, remarkable retention of the quality of fruit, as well as longer time between storage and transportation with no shrinkage or blackening. Exporters have noted an increase in customer satisfaction as well as fewer loss.”
PeelON remains focused on grow further into the Latin American and Asian markets: “”We are actively engaging with local distributors and retailers across Mexico, Guatemala, and Honduras to expand the use of RamPeel. We also are looking to establish partnership opportunities with companies in Southeast Asia, where tropical fruit exports are on the rise and the need for eco-friendly packaging options is growing. With retailers and exporters continuing to are looking for ways to increase the shelf-life of their products and minimize consumption, the use of plant-based compostable packaging is becoming a viable alternative to plastic. Options such as RamPeel may play a significant influence on how fresh food as well as sustainability.” Rodriguez concludes.
