In the marketing the year (MY) 2024/25 due to the increased area being planted, and with normal yields Post forecasts that production from lemons would increase by 2.6 percent to 197,000 metric tonnes (MT). Chilean exports of lemons will grow by 3.3 percent to 93,000 metric tonnes. For MY 2024/25 Post believes that the production of oranges is expected to increase by 2.2 percent, totalling the 190,000 tonnes because of the larger area that is being planted and the assumption of regular yields. Exports of oranges will also rise by 3.0 percent to reach 103,000 tonnes. In MY 2024/25 the mandarin output is expected to increase by 13.1 percent with a total of 250,000 tons thanks to the increased area of planting. In addition, exports of mandarins will rise to 218,000 MT. This is an 14.1 percent growth from 2023/24.
Production
In MY 2024/25 due to the increased area being planted, and with regular production, Post estimates that lemon production will rise by 2.6 percent, resulting in 197,000 metric tonnes. The lemon-growing area is projected to grow to 10,400 ha (ha) by MY 2024/25. This is the equivalent of a 4.8 percent increase over MY 2023/24.
Lemon production by farmers has proven and exports to be viable alternative to other varieties including avocados due to the increased prices and less water usage. The lemon-growing area in Chile has steadily grown during the last ten year of marketing. The production of lemons spans the Coquimbo region located in northern region of Chile up to the O’Higgins region in the central south.
In reality, 40% of the total area that is planted lies within the Metropolitana region located which is located in central Chile. The area of lemons planted increased across all regions of production, with the exception of O’Higgins which saw a decrease of 2.1 percent. It is the Chilean lemon harvest starts in April. Then, during the Chilean winter months, which run between June and September, international costs are more expensive than the domestic price and prompting the majority of Chilean producers to sell citrus to North America, Europe, as well as Asia. In the summer, between December and March as the volume of production decreases and the prices at home are high, Chilean lemon production is offered on the market in Chile.
