The launch of the first section of the port in Chancay which is located in Peru could be the turning stage for the region’s exports towards Asia. This huge project, managed by Cosco Shipping Ports, has been requiring an initial cost in the amount of 1.3 billion dollars. The port has already been viewed as a major driver of shipping trade not just within Peru however, also within the neighboring countries like Chile, Colombia and Ecuador.
The manager of marketing and commercial at Cosco Shipping Ports in Chancay, Alonso Guinand, says that the initial phase comprises four docks, with the initial capacity to operate of 1 million TEUs. “The final goal of this project is to build fifteen docks which would need a total investment around 4 billion dollars” Guinand states.

The port also is constructed to adjust to demands of the market. Reduced transit time from Asia is among the port’s significant successes. As per Guinand, “the direct route that is provided by Chancay reduces the travel time by 10 days from 36 days to only 26 days. This is particularly beneficial in the case of perishable items like fresh fruits, which can now be delivered in more favorable condition and will have lower cost of shipping.”
The impact on the economy of the port’s new construction is already acknowledged. At the time of the opening ceremony by the President of Peru stated the port would be able to contribute 2 percent to Peru’s gross domestic production (GDP). However, the advantages do not get any better from with that. “Chancay is now a vital port of land and maritime transport throughout the region. It is also aiding trade with neighbors,” says Guinand.
This initiative will not only increase exports to traditional markets and will serve as a catalyst for further improvements in education, infrastructure and related services. Businesses from, say the healthcare and retail sectors are searching for an opportunity within and around Chancay and are demonstrating its transformational potential.
In spite of the initial difficulties when undertaking a project the magnitude of this, Guinand is optimistic, considering the enthusiasm of customers as well as the future prospects. “With this port expansion, Peru is strengthening its competitive position in the global market and is taking an important step toward establishing the role of Peru as an important exporter on this Asian market.”
Port of Chancay is more than just an infrastructure. It’s a key into an era of sea commerce across the region. It’s that is capable of changing local economies as well as putting Latin America on the international stage.
