Morocco is steadily growing the exports of mandarins it ships to Canada as reported by EastFruit. For the MY 2022/23 (September-April) Moroccan exporters shipped 73,000 tons of mandarins to Canada, the highest ever recorded and more than 50% of the total mandarin imports, from all sources. Additionally, Morocco managed to increase its exports to Canada despite a drop in the total value of its exports of mandarins during the MY currently in.
Mandarins are among the main exports for Morocco as the country ranks one of the five top exporters of the fruit. For MY 2022/22, Morocco exports reached their record at 625,000 tons. Mandarins are the most popular segment of the exports made by Morocco of fruits, and second only to tomatoes, in terms of total exports to horticulture. They already have brought an export worth of $290 million for Moroccan exporters of the MY currently in.
The Moroccan mandarin season for exports runs between September and August and the country has been swiftly expanding its exports over the last few years of marketing. But, 2022 was a year that brought Moroccan mandarin farmers lower yields and an increase in exports. So, exports for the beginning of the MY in which we are currently by over 25% compared to the previous year.
Morocco exports mandarins in about sixty countries around the globe. The MY 2022/23 timeframe, exports of mandarins to nearly every destination dropped but not to Canada. In addition, the imports from Canada of Mandarins from Morocco have reached record levels.
From September 2022 to April 2023 Morocco shipped 73,000 tonnes mandarins for the Canadian market. Canada was third, after Russia and also the USA largest importer of these items.
It is also worth noting that Canada is one of the top importers of mandarins anywhere in the world. It is also ranked as 10th. Canada annually brings in 150,000 to 60,000 tonnes of the fruits and Morocco is the main source of mandarins.
Moroccan mango exports into Canada hit their highest level during the year 2020/21. They then began to decrease however, the proportion of Morocco on the Canadian market increased.
What was the strategy that helped Moroccan growers increase their exports into Canada even in the face of declining the trade of mandarins between both the countries?
Moroccan mango export season begins in October, and runs through April. The highest volume being observed between November and March.
