U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Office of Field Operations personnel who are assigned to the Pharr International Bridge, this week took $10.7 million worth of methamphetamine out of an unopened shipment of jalapeno peppers.
“Our CBP officers continue to stop massive amounts of narcotics at our cargo facility, all while facilitating lawful trade entering the country,” said Port Director Carlos Rodriguez, Hidalgo/Pharr/Anzalduas Port of Entry.
On October 14th, CBP officers assigned to the Pharr International Bridge cargo facility came across an unidentified tractor trailer that was coming from Mexico. An CBP officer was able to refer the vehicle to an additional inspection, which comprised the use of non-intrusive equipment for inspection and screening with a canine team. Inspection of the cargo was able to identify the 9,426 boxes that were filled with 72 buckets with a amount that was 1,205.48 kilograms (546.80 tonnes) of methamphetamine suspected to be concealed inside the container.
CBP OFO seized the narcotics as well as the tractor trailer, and agents from Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) started a criminal investigation.
