EastFruit analysts want to bring attention to the dramatic increase in price for the freshest apples in Ukraine in the past week. The prices for Gala as well as Golden Delicious apples jumped by 50 percent in a single week! What is the reason of this price hike?

“Producers anticipate a significant increase in the prices of apples this year and are therefore striving to get the highest quality apples in the storage of fruit as they can. In the last week, availability of apples with low quality and cheap prices that can’t be stored diminished. Additionally, an increase in banana wholesale prices in the last week on Ukrainian market has made a significant impact on the increase in the price of apples. Thirdly, the increase in the market demand for Ukrainian apples in the international market. This has allowed for an increase in exports to markets in which the costs are significantly higher.” states Yevgen Kuzin, an international consultant with FAO.

Apple prices are likely to increase in the in the near future?

“This week, prices for Gala Apples in Ukraine may decrease a bit due to the fact that the demand for domestic apples has slowed down after the sudden increase in the price. But, the decline could be as high as 1 to 2 UAH/kg. And in this instance, the prices for hryvnia are more expensive than they were in the past five years.” is the explanation of Yevgen Kuzin.

The season 2023/24, however, is the only instance where it’s easy to create a long-term outlook for the prices of apples. Price will surely rise and they could rise fast during times of stability.
