The Vietnam’s durian cultivation area has grown by an average 24.5 percent annually since the year 2010. The cultivation area is 131,000 hectares currently and officials are concerned about an oversupply. In the Central Highland region has the largest durian surface of nearly 70,000 acres, and is then being followed by Mekong Delta as well as the southeastern and central coastal areas.

As per Vu Duc Con the deputy director of Dak Lak Agriculture and Rural Development Dak Lak Agriculture and Rural Development, there are more than 28,600 acres of durian in Dak Lak’s Central Highland province of Dak Lak and that number is expected to rise in the next few years. The rate of expansion is far too rapid and could be a reason to be concerned.

A different Central Highland province, Lam Dong is suing the farmers with a cautionary note about the unusually rapid expansion rate. From 2021 to the present, it has increased by almost 44%, bringing it up to 19,700. Lam Dong’s durian production currently stands at 15,000 tonnes per year and predicted to grow in 2027 to reach 225,000 tons.

Nguyen Nhu cuong, the head of the department’s horticulture division Nguyen Nhu Cuong, head of the Ministry’s horticulture were cultivated in areas that weren’t suitable for them, they could produce poor quality fruit, which could cause damage to farmers as well as the Vietnamese durian branding. Another issue in the durian farming sector include insufficient connections between traders and farmers poor branding, inexperienced workers, insufficient infrastructure and unfair competitiveness.
