“Increase in the demand for Turkish apple could begin after the New Year”

One Turkish exporter of apples The Gala has already gone out of stock as there was plenty of interest in this variety of apple as per Mehmet Cakmak who is the sales and marketing director for Turkish fresh exporter Ani Tarim.

“Our apple season began in the month of August, with an apple variety called the Gala variety. Due to the huge demands, this variety has almost gone from our stock. Presently, we the Red Delicious, Golden Delicious and Granny Smith varieties for domestic as well as international markets. The primary destination for exports of our apple varieties is India. Contrary to the week this season, we have an ebb in demand from the market in this particular season. We believe there are two major factors that are responsible for this. In spite of the poor crop for 2023’s harvest, Indian local apples are plentiful. In addition, there was an rise in European as well as US producers, which means that a large number of apple harvests were shipped to India between October and November.”

Ani Tarim was not fazed at the increased competition on India. Indian market. Cakmak expects demand for Turkish apples to grow during the coming year. “This is not a new occurrence for us since our clients have told us of the likelihood of a greater competition in the market during this time. Indian customers prefer red apples. Red Delicious variety and Turkey is the biggest supplier of that variety compared to the other countries, and is able to provide it with high-quality through June and July. Therefore, we believe that the increased demand for Turkish apple varieties could begin after the New Year’s Eve.”

In the end, apple production was just a little lower than those who are Turkish producers of apple, Cakmak explains: “Turkiye was able to produce around 4.8 million tonnes of freshly picked apples in 2022. This is anticipated to reach 4.7 million tons by 2023’s season. This year, with an 7.3 percent increase over 2021, 380.492 tons of the total harvest were shipped by Turkish suppliers for export to 69 countries. This resulted in 166,488 millions dollars worth. India was the biggest user of Turkish apple, with 100,496 tonnes, followed by Russia 80,981 tons and finally Iraq with 51,823 tons of apples in 2022.”

“Turkish producers are conscious that, in addition to reducing our costs of production as well as carrying out better marketing strategies it is essential to diversify our market and variety to be able to remain competitive on the international apple industry. That was among the most important topics debated at the second National Apple Workshop, an occasion that was organized on a nationwide size in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry from 21-22 November, in Egirdir/Isparta. Following the first edition in 2012, this workshop brought together all shareholders which included growers, exporters as well as institutions. It also gave a detailed analysis of the present situation in the Turkish apple industry and established objectives for the future to all investors within the framework of the The Workshop’s Plan of Action. Plan,” Cakmak concludes.
