In the second week of garlic harvesting begins, a substantial decrease in the cost of garlic has been noticed, with a significant drop of one-half. The decrease in prices is due to a higher supply coming by Madhya Pradesh, leading to an increase in price. Prior to this, the market was flooded with garlic costs of up to the price of Rs 400 per kilogram however, the start of the new season reduced prices to between 200-250 per kilogram for the retail market.
Price reductions are in line with the market’s daily arrival of between 20 and 30 tons of garlic, since the beginning of the season. In addition, the shift of garlic production within Maharashtra has led to a rise in dependence on imports and has seen Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Gujarat becoming the most important garlic-producing states. An official from the Pune market yard has highlighted the increase in garlic imports coming of Madhya Pradesh and projected a continuing decline in prices over the coming months, in line with the patterns of post-cold weather and garlic harvests in other states.
