Within Kurigram, Bangladesh, local farmers have enjoyed a prosperous spring onion harvest, in particular using the variety N-53, that is highly sought-after due to its superior quality. Its Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) located in Kurigram was instrumental in achieving this feat, by giving farmers fertilizers, seeds, as well as financial aid for their labor expenses. This program has helped about 800 farmers from the district.

An artisan from the village of Koikuri expressed his satisfaction using N-53 onions. He noted an abundant harvest and favourable market prices. Another farmer noted the efficacy of the variety N-53 having fewer onions per kilogram than traditional varieties and a good yields.

The DAE has increased the areas of land for the cultivation of onion in Kurigram in the hopes of boost farmer participation over the next few years. The former DAE Deputy Director Biplob Kumar Mohanta has emphasized the importance of seedsbed preparation, and also the potential of the N-53 onion to improve flavor of foods and lessen the dependence on imported food items.
