There’s a constant abundance of good quality watermelon right now being delivered through The Nogales, Arizona region. “In California, in the next couple of weeks, there will be coincide with those,” says Dennis Peterson from Riverbend Fresh LLC.

Initial reports suggest that growing of watermelon is up slightly in Arizona this time of year which could mean that a greater supply of watermelon could be coming in June.

As we head back to California and harvest is likely to be delayed a couple of days because of the colder weather in the beginning of this year. “However things seem to be picking up right now. It’s fairly smooth and easy start” Peterson adds. Peterson.

The sizing of watermelon appears to be on the average but more information will be released next week about size. “Watermelons generally start larger at the start of picking, therefore even if we do end in smaller sizes at start with, it’s going to match what retailers want,” says Peterson.

Great watermelon movement

For the demand side, it appears to be favorable and the rate of growth is very positive. “We have been able to bring the retail prices at a level that was normal within the last couple of weeks, so the demand has been cruising to keep pace and sustaining supply,” Peterson says. Peterson and notes there is a trend in Western area, the retail price below $10 usually moves quite good. “It appears that there’s an increase in the amount of demand from consumers during the last couple of years.”

As for the future, he predicts prices to remain as it currently is. “There’s plenty of land being grown and I’m convinced that there’s an increase in amount of food compared with the typical from the desert regions,” he says. After it gets underway, Central California region gets underway it could have some supply issues caused by factors such as extreme weather conditions and other. “Then the region will kick up again by mid-July with tons of fruits from all over the place in August.”

So if there’s the possibility of an upward market trend that it could happen prior to July 4, and if the market does move, it’s likely to be an unintentional dip, and after that rebounding after a stronger supply from mid-July through the middle of August.
