The farmers of Murang’a County, Kenya, face substantial losses because of the disappearance of avocados from their farms, especially in the Maragua, Kandara, and Gatanga areas. Murang’a County Avocado Cooperative Union Murang’a County Avocado Cooperative Union which is led by John Mwaniki, reports that illegal traders are buying these illegal goods for a small amount and then selling these items at a profit for processors and exporters.

The rogue thefts are seen as a deterrent for the investment into avocado farming. Even though there were more than 14 arrests by police officers in Kandara however, the problem persists. Farmers, such as Michael Kariuki, whose farm is located in Mitumbiri was the target and is calling for more protection by police. Furthermore, measures to deter processing companies from taking produce during the late at night are suggested in order to stop the disappearances. This situation has been considered to be a danger to the lives of small-scale farmers. This requires an effort in collaboration to improve the value chain and protect investment.
