The Namibian Agronomic Board (NAB) has implemented a closed-border rule on certain crops for June in order to assist local farmers, as per the Simonis Storm Securities report. The items that are restricted include butternut, beetroot and onions. This policy aims to boost production locally by restricting imports. This program, as an element of the Market Share Promotion (MSP) program, encourages importers to purchase local sources. But due to the shortages in the local supply the carrots, washed potatoes as well as lettuce are still in the list of open borders and are therefore able to be imported without restriction. Jam tomatoes, too, will be subject to regulation according to a proportional basis in order in order to ensure a balance between local and imports.
