Cherry season has arrived in Verona at full speed

“This year’s crop of cherries was lower than normal in Verona as well as the remainder of Italy since fewer fruits were set, and the overall decline. However, the quality of the cherries is higher due to this,” reports Roberto Bolla who is the owner of “Bolla Ferdinando srl”, one of the most prominent cherry producers in northern Italy established by his father nearly forty years ago.

“The the cherry season in Verona started in earnest around April 20th when the earliest quantities of products in greenhouses. Unfortunately, the heavy rains that lasted all through May destroyed a large portion of the crop, especially those that were early in the season like Bigarreau, Burlat and Early Bigi. The prices for production are quite excessive, while the quantity of produce collected until the 10th of June were a bit low However, the quantity and quality are the normal range of a typical season.”

We’re currently harvesting fruits of the hills, which are located at 500 meters above sea level, including varieties that have a delicious flavor including Kordia, Regina, the 7 Sweet series, Areko. In the last few years, our most sought-after kinds were remarkably identical to the ones that are discovered within Puglia, i.e. Bigarreau Giorgia and Ferrovia and local cultivars like Mora de Verona. In the last decade, growers are focusing on premium cultivars that are less prone to cracking and with intriguing varieties like 28-30 and higher, and the most important thing is, an extremely large Brix degree.”

“Next season, we’ll be picking Final11, Final12 and the Final11, Final12 and Final13 varieties. They will ripen approximately 15 days earlier than Kordia. Particularly, our network comprises more than 500 producers’ families. Our greenhouses are our first stop and finish by the Lessinia plateau, which is 900 meters asl. It allows us to be able to have fresh food and a long the supply.”

This year, the firm began working with 80 farmers from Trento that will begin picking operations from July 5 to 8 and last until the close of July. It is changing the climate so think about some other stone fruits, such as the plums, peaches and prunes are already in the early stages of harvesting and is expected to begin next week.

“All products are sold through the Italian large retail chain, discounts and mass retailers. They are sold in containers or tray sizes as required by the customer (300 500, 1000 grams) or are sold in punnets of 1 to 2 kilograms or sold in at a loose. The transport is done only by our trucks to ensure the cold chain.”
