The revival of trade between Pakistan is an important issue for the Amritsar election

In Amritsar’s industrial and trading sector, the reintroduction of trade relations with Pakistan through the land route is an essential political issue. Some stakeholders believe that reviving trade across borders would bring benefits to transporters, farmers as well as laborers. Before the end of bilateral trade relations 2019 trade in between India and Pakistan via this route was around Rs 50 billion (EUR550 million). Local industry representatives have communicated with representatives from the various political groups the importance to revive trade in Amritsar’s development.

Amritsar is one of the 13 constituencies within Punjab is scheduled to participate in the closing stage of seven phases Lok Sabha elections on June 1. Trade is considered to be crucial to create employment in Amritsar’s Integrated Check Post in Amritsar and also for the economy overall. The trade previously supported approximately 2,500 porters, and also facilitated the daily activities of 500 trucks engaged in the export and import of goods.
