The losses are already high of the non-long storage fruit inside the cooling chambers. This means that their storage is not ideal. A few pears destined for storage over a period of time are available in the markets, and as months progress they will become the most popular item. Some of them are Santa Maria and the majority will be Krystalli,” says Mr. Kinolis.
The situation is a mix of both pros and cons. According to the Greek exporter states: “We treat our long store pears with SmartFresh in order to keep their flesh solid. This is why we’re able to prolong the selling of our pears following the Christmas season. In the past, because Greek packers didn’t use these items, they had to begin importing pears at the moment. Today, we are able to offer premium Greek pear products after the Christmas season also. But, the rate of sales is slower for the pears that are which are suitable for storage for a longer period of time since consumers will need to store them in the refrigerator for five days or more until the fruit becomes soft enough.”
“I think that due to the firm skin on the pear that makes them suitable for storage over a long period The volume that is typically sold in two months may be waiting for three months before they can be offered for sale. Storage that is longer also adds to costs for these pears. It is estimated that EXW prices will rise by 10-15 cents per kilo. We try to keep price as low as is possible due to the intense competition from citrus, apples particularly from import bananas. The majority of the remaining pears are Krystalli. The supply is plentiful and we are confident that we have enough stocks. Ours as well as from other Greek exporters, should last through May.” the Mr. Kinolis concludes.
