Myanmar is seeking exporters to fruit trade with China under a new phytosanitary agreement

The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation of Myanmar has released a request for Expressions of Interest (EOI) from businesses that are interested in exporting pineapples China. This is in line with the Sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) Protocol agreement between Myanmar and China and China, which requires the each year SPS measures. EEOs have to be filed with departments of Agriculture in their respective states and regions before the 28th of February, 2025.

In the wake of an announcement by General Administration of Customs of the People’s Republic of China (GACC) announcement of 11 November, Myanmar’s fruit was approved to import to China according to phytosanitary rules. The plant is cultivated in both the southern and northern areas in Shan State, with the fruiting season running from June through September, Myanmar’s famous pineapple had was previously imported into China via an open channel to facilitate commerce across borders, but was shut down on June 16, the year 2019.

Although we explored new markets through Thailand, Singapore, and other markets, market share was still low. Negotiations are bringing about the reopening of the route for exports towards China through the sea trade. The GACC will require a list pineapple factories and processing facilities to be approved, and this list is then posted on the GACC website.

The farmers of Myanmar must follow the best agricultural practices, which include the management of quality, a tracking system to ensure food security as well as integrated pest control. Fresh fruit must be cleaned by a high-pressure solution to eliminate debris, bugs as well as other pollutants. The authorities of the country are charged to inspect not less than 2 percent of exports in the initial two years. The number will decrease to one percent if there are no pests are discovered.
