California eyes are more colorful Kiwi production to come in the next season

Kiwi supplies are beginning to decrease in California. “We’re most likely one of the few shipping companies that is still operating from California,” says Al Bates President Sun Pacific Shippers. Sun Pacific Shippers, who says that they will keep shipping California fruits until the 1st day of July. At that point Sun Pacific Shippers will shift to importing supply from Chile.

In terms of moving to imports, this is consistent with the historical pattern regarding when imports are first introduced within the marketplace. “We’ve been a bit later than that before, when we had California Kiwi, and we usually close the gap between early and mid-July when there’s substantial imports being brought in,” says Bates. There are odd years. Two previous years, a huge California crop led to Sun Pacific shipped into September.

However, this year’s crop was a moderate-sized one that was of high-quality. “We were able to harvest a higher yield than last year, but overall, it was a good size crop for our industry to offer.”

Shipping from the Southern Hemisphere

Additionally, currently shipping are kiwis coming from Southern Hemisphere countries including New Zealand. However, while they’re mostly Gold Kiwis, Hayward kiwis are also being delivered. In the case of California the state is predominantly growing the green Hayward Kiwis, it’s working towards growing its own version of gold Kiwi and is already moving to the red variety of Kiwis. “Diving into other various varieties of color will enable us to provide our clients with better quality,” adds Bates.

The demand for kiwi is also like it does every day. “It has been steady over these past couple of decades,” says Bates, noting that 75 percent of the fruit is grown in a controlled environments (CA) that allows it to last longer on the market.

In terms of prices, they have increased over the previous year as a result of the growing demand prices for shipping. The cost has been increasing by 50 percent in the last 4 to 5 years.
