“By maintaining the demand while ensuring high returns, we’re certain that our growers will reap the benefits”

The major focus for Te Mata Exports over the recent two years has been developing their core line of products, especially apples. They also have been working to expand their company further in Asia.

“As as a company that is constantly growing, we’re expanding our footprint and continue to grow. It’s not an intricate method – we’re blessed to be able to achieve the perfect balance of knowledge, experience, geographic spread as well as strong connections and an unwavering determination to provide for our the growers as well as our customers. The team at ag-spy live our motto of’securing the very best and supplying all over the world'” says the CEO Sarah McCormack.

“In regards to NZ apple varieties, we achieved substantial progress with Our IP varieties this year. Rebranding our A1 apple was well-received in every market. The earlier timing of the season, along with the vibrant red colour and sweet flavour is what makes this apple distinct. The demand was very high, and many of our customers have said that they’d like to buy greater quantities in the coming season. There are now 100 hectares of land that will be planted in Hawke’s Bay and Gisborne by 2026.

Te Mata have also celebrated their debut commercial harvest of the Cosmic crisp. This particular variety, which can be stored well and tastes better as time passes, was picked in March at the close of the month.

“We’ve just delivered airfreight samples to our customers, and we’ve received great reviews. We’ll be shipping smaller amounts out in the coming couple of weeks. This is a perfect time because this apple will be available at a time that there will be no shortage of apples available in the marketplace and will be in the middle of Mid-Autumn Festival which is really beneficial for our clients. The growers are showing a lot of interest in Cosmic Crisp and a lot of whom are in phase of revitalising their orchards. Many growers appreciate how it works in the orchard, and also that it needs minimal inputs when as compared with other kinds. It’s a bright future for this variety New Zealand.”

Te Mata are also in working on redeveloping an apple orchard within Hawke’s Bay following the damage caused by Cyclone Gabrielle in the past year. The orchard is now mostly planted with the A1 along with the Cosmic Crisp varieties.

“Next year, we’re going to be doing more market promotions for both a1 as well as Cosmic Crisp, as the volumes grow. It is vital that these kinds are economically profitable for our growers and to ensure that, we’re limiting the quantity we will plant of each variety within New Zealand at 100 hectares for a1 and 150 ha in Cosmic Crisp. With the goal of maintaining demand and providing positive returns, we’re sure that our farmers will be benefited.”

Te Mata will be present at Asia Fruit Logistica in Hall 5 Booth, 5-5Q20.
