Bangladesh is able to secure a mango export contract with China

Bangladesh is granted permission from China to sell fresh mangoes following an agreement regarding phytosanitary standards. The news was made public through the announcement of “Announcement No. 94 of 2024′ issued by the Chinese General Administration of Customs, that was issued after the Protocol of Phytosanitary Requirements for the Export of freshly picked Mangoes of Bangladesh to China that was agreed upon in Beijing. This agreement will ease the entry of Bangladeshi mangoes to the Chinese market. The Chinese market is seeing a constant increase in imports of fruits, reaching $172 billion during the first quarter of 2021.

China’s desire to import the mangoes of Bangladesh was first announced in the year 2000, when an Chinese delegation recommending the importation of mangoes, as well as other fruit such as Jackfruits. After a visit of the Chinese experts to evaluate the qualities of Bangladeshi mangoes and their quality, permission was granted to export them. This is believed to be an effort to decrease the trade gap between Bangladesh and China as well as the potential of mangoes becoming one of the main export items due to their huge demand in China.

China is a major importer of mangoes has seen its mango imports either fresh or processed increasing fivefold between the years of the years 2019 to 2020.
