Bagerhat producers export their tomatoes to Malaysia when local prices fall

The tomato growers of Bagerhat, Bangladesh, are struggling to compete in a market that is overcrowded through exporting their produce to Malaysia. At present, 40 tonnes of tomatoes have been shipped to Malaysia in the last month, and there are 26 more tonnes set to be shipped. The local markets have seen prices fall to $0.04-$0.05 per kilogram, which makes impossible for growers to pick.

The program, which is led by Faisal Ahmed from Madhumati Agro & Nursery, is a feasible option, giving farmers $0.12-$0.13 per kilogram. “This is an enormous leap forward,” said Ahmed, who plans to increase exports of other vegetable varieties soon. Top-quality varieties of tomatoes like Bahubali as well as Beautiful-2 are among the varieties that are being sold.

Farmers such as Helal Uddin Molla who were initially struggling with low costs, now have an increase in optimism. “This marks the first time that our tomatoes have been sent overseas. Farmers in our area have a renewed hope,” he stated. Export efforts include the collection of tomatoes from local growers and taking the produce to Chattogram port to be shipped into refrigerated containers in order to preserve their freshness.

Shankar Kumar Majumder from the Department of Agricultural Extension confirmed that the tomatoes met requirements for quality prior to export. Even though local market prices remain at a low level, the export program will provide a long-term solution.
