The Peruvian blueberry market, an emerging but thriving sector of the market for agricultural exports has recently faced the first serious challenge of its kind due to the climate-related disturbances caused due to El Nino. The result was an increase in production as well as a delay to the picking season. Despite this however, the business enjoyed an unexpected benefit, as the resulting shortage of blueberries available on the international market increased prices as well as providing financial relief for producers facing difficulties in obtaining market access.
The advancements in genetic research and the tenacity of Peruvian farmers are a key factor in the overcoming of these hurdles and reestablishing Peru’s position as an international leader in the world of exports for blueberries. This is evident in the increasing volume of blueberries being shipped for international markets, with a particular focus in Europe. The Netherlands serves as the principal entry point for Peruvian blueberries to Europe large portions going through Amsterdam as well as Vissigen ports.
At the end of week 45, Peru had exported 46.014 tonnes of blueberries. This is an increase of 60% in comparison to the previous year which is in line with industry estimates. Most of the exports were shipped via sea, highlighting the logistics of the sector and its capacity.
Major contributors to the exports include Complejo Agroindustrial, Camposol, and Danper Trujillo SAC, amongst others. They show a diverse range of company presence in the market. The diversity of exports is dominated by Ventura and Biloxi varieties, and a substantial portion of the shipment including newer, undescribed kinds.
In terms of regionally, La Libertad and Lambayeque are the main contributors to exports of blueberries into Europe and Europe, showing significant growth in comparison to the prior year. The performance demonstrates not just the improvement of the Peruvian blueberry industry from climate problems, but also its rapid growth and establishment as an market leader.
